Slow importing from Hard Drive
 

I am trying to Import 15,000 MP3+G's into Hoster as KMA files. They are all converting but it takes about 10 to 15 seconds per song. All of my songs are in the order of Artist Title Disc Id. The define field order is set at: Artist - Title - Disc ID . after that I have the Brand set at Custom assembly. This way each song will keep the disc ID. Like I said it is taking 10 to 15 seconds per song. I am running a Dell Inpirion 1505 with

Duo Core processor T2400 (2mb Cache/1.83 GHZ/667 MHz FSB)
Windows XP Media Center
1GB Shared Dual channel DDR2 SDRAM
Only thing running is Hoster, no antivirus software and all programs running in background disabled.

Anything I can do to speed things up? Thanks.

I think this is due to all the hype from the Dual Core Chips. They cut down on heat and reduced actual Performance on this, from my Testing.

I have a Pentium 4 2.4ghz (older) 533mhz bus processor in my laptop. I have 2 gb of Memory a 4200rpm Hard drive. I just imported 88 .zip files in 26 seconds.

This was with Version 3.303. It always speeds right through these songs.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 6400 (Buisness version of the 1505, I believe) DUO Core t2300 (1.6ghz) with 512mb of Memory. It imported these same exact files in 41 seconds. So I am not sure if the memory made that large a difference or if it is the actual Processor speed.

Yours is faster than this laptop, so it should take less time, nothing like what you are reporting.

What version of the software are you running?

I am running 3.303. Are you importing in the same manner I explained above. When I first imported these 15, 000 files I left the Brand set at select a brand instead of Custom assembly. The whole operation took only 1.5 to 2 hours. This was great but the problem was every KMA had the same brand and the disc ID was something like XYZ0001. Not practical for book printing. That is why I switched to custom assembly. It gives me every brand and proper disc ID. Unfortunately it is very slow. Hope this info helps.

Normally importing ZIP files converts at about 3 files per second, or 180 per minute.

Make sure your Autorun is disabled for the drive. We have seen this add a significant delay.

Ok. Two things though. First these are not Zip files, they are MP3+G's. Second are you referring to auto-run on the external drive? Thanks.

Come to think about are you referring to Auto-play. If youdo mean Auto-Run, I am not sure what you mean. Can you explain how to do this. Thank you.

he means your cd-rom.

when you insert a disc it pops up a window and asks which task you want to perform.

go to my computer/ right click over the cd-rom then hit properties. then change all the the tasks to "take no action"

I'm not using a CD rom. I am importing from a Maxtor External 300 GB Hard Drive.

i mean the drive. sorry

Unfortunately that had no effect. I am timing this to about 10-20 seconds per song. The hour glass actually comes up between each song. Could there be anything else causing this?

Since you are using a Hard Drive, ignore the "Auto-Run/Auto-Play" point.

MTUSUPPORT and I posted normal times for importing. ZIP or MP3+G doesn't matter; they convert at roughly the same speed. Hoster has an "unzip" tool built in.

It doesn't matter what the filenames are to my knowledge as to the conversion speed.

You need to read the Manual about the "Define field order" fields, and BATCH importing, then you will understand how this complex operation works.

When bad files are found during import, their path/name is written to a log .txt file where you can later open and test or unzip/rezip each.

WinRAR costs $29. It can batch unzip and rezip the contents in a a folder. Since Hoster's Import Hard Drive Files screen creates a .txt log file of found bad files, you could move these to a different folder, then use WinRAR to convert them from MAX compression to a standard ZIP compression that Hoster will import.

So if I am understanding correctly, there must be something with my lap top because it is taking way to long to import each file. Would you agree?

Sometimes things are not as easy as 1 - 2 - 3. We're not trying to pass the problem off, but rather diagnose the cause. So far, the facts you have posted, and our testing and others experiences, lead us to the current conclusion it is your computer.

Also, we have never had this long an import time reported, to my humble knowledge. Thus, it is way off in left field as to what the cause may be. It will be very interesting to see the eventual cause.

MTUSUPPORT may have more to say on Tuesday when we are back at work.

Listen I don't feel like your passing the buck at all. This notebook is only 2 weeks old. I will be on th phone with Dell later. There are a couple of other subtle little things that are bothering me with this notebook. I will keep you posted, same please if you or MTU have any other thoughts. Thanks.

No. I will give it a try.

By disabling do you mean removing it. If not how do you disable Windows Media Player?

Disable it

Start/set program access and defaults/drop dpwn the little arrow to the right and uncheck windows media player.

When I drop down the little arrow to the right there is not an option for Windows Media Player. There are 4 drop down menus:

Computer Manufacturer
Microsoft Windows
Non-Windows
Custom

If you click on Microsft windows there is a section for Media Player but no option to disable.

I am running Windows XP Media Edition 2005. Are you perhaps referring to a differnt version of Windows or am I missing something?
