Unknown second drive - doesn't appear under Windows if it is a Ghost controlled drive
 

I purchased a portable PC from MTU. It is NOT a laptop. The PC was purchased with Duel 200GB hard drives. My discs are now loaded into Hoster and I wish to backup the system. I can't seem to locate the secondary drive. I click My Computer from the desktop start tab and it shows Only the Local Disc C: as a hard disc drive. I open "drive Image 7.0" to basic view-I click back up drives, which opens the drive back up wizard-I click next and two drives are listed. The first drive is Local Disc (C:\) The second drive is (x:\) The x in the second drive is small and is high on the line. I then click next and the file name for (x:\) is Unknown_Drive. At this point I am dead in the water.

You will not see the Dual 200gb drive unless you go into the Ghost Program.

Look for the folder: Programs\Norton\Norton Ghost (Symantec bought Norton so also look for Symantec instead of Norton, depending on when it was installed).

Double click the ghost.exe file.

Once the Program opens, click on Copy Drive.

Select the C:\ drive for the first selection, then click Next.

Select the Drive that shows the same size as C:\ for the destination, it should show 187gb or something of that size.

Click Next.

Now select Check Destination for file system errors" and Set drive active for Booting OS.

Click Next and then it should begin copying. When it is done, the drive is copied to the Hidden 200gb drive. If your computer hard drive ever fails, you can then boot to this drive in the Bios of the computer.

Thanks Brian for the reply. From what I read I must purchase Ghost to be able to Use the Back up drive, Is this correct?

If we put a backup drive and backup software on the system it should have Ghost or Drive Image software, either one. This would depend on when it was purchased.

You might check to see if it is installed, it would have been an addon. This way it backs up the entire hard drive.

Beav, I have NO IDEA what this ghost thing is, so I'll ask now to get it out of my system, in case I have to deal with it in the future. can you tell me a bit more about it please?

nortons make a utility that will ghost your hard drive to another hard drive in case you original hard drive fails. then all you would have to do is swap out the hard drives and reboot the computer to be back in business. takes only about ten minutes.

in short it clones your hard drive to another hard drive with out going through the hastle of reinstalling windows.

Beavis is correct. It clones your hard drive so you have an EXACT bit-for-bit copy. If your master drive fails, you can swap to the backup within minutes and your show is back up and running. Since this is not a mirror operation, but requires you to execute the copy operation, it won't contain your current Hoster Project file that is running your show. However, having a backup of your hard drive will at least allow you to in minutes be back up and ready to run your show again.

So it is just a back-up of a hard drive that anyone can do with any copy and paste operation?

According to My order of 11-11-2004, order #18759, MTU did install a secondary 200GB drive on My portable. I also show billing for back up software. I also have the installation CD for Power Quest in front of Me. I have sucessfully tested the PQRE.
It may help to read My first thread again. The Unknown_Drive is 190779MB in size and shows 10225MB used. I feel it is indeed the back up drive. I may be getting confused with incorrect "local Pathnames" and "Parameters". I don't Know how to access it or why is has 10225MB used on it.

The second drive should show up when you open MY COMPUTER.

It would be listed under HARD DISC DRIVES, show the drive designation,and double clicking on it should open it.

Right clicking on the drive designation in MY COMPUTER should enable you to create a shortcut to it on your desktop. I keep one there for convenience.

The only hard disc showing when I click My Computer is C:\. :?

Go through CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, HARDWARE, DEVICE MANAGER, DISC DRIVES, and see if it lists two disc drives.

Just curious as to how you determined that.

Sounds like the same info I see when I go through My COMPUTER.

Was any drive symbol showing wherever it was you were looking at that info? If so, did you try double clicking on it to try to access the drive?

Through `Device Manager` I see two drives both have a number of ST3200822A.
The capacity of the Unknown_Drive I got from opening Drive Image 7.0 and clicking on Back Up Drives. That opens the back up wizard. When I click next a list of drives appears. I select the X:\ Drive and click next. The filename for this drive is "Unknown_Drive. I did't see any drive symbals. :?

she/he needs to configure it for windows to see.

go to

control panel/administrative tools/computer managment/disk managmant

see if its in there. then i will tell you what to do.
