2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
Using an external USB Drive to store KMA files. Also keeping a copy of kma files on main (Home) computers HD as a backup ---
When the USB Drive is disconnected from the main computer -- Hoster Error's out - it is still looking for the file songs.mdb on the external USB drive and won't let me into anything to change the drive 'Hoster Error -- Sorry, must close" V2.219 --- Some programs allow this type of 'direction' to be put in the command string that calls the exe file. Can this be done in Hoster (didn't see it in the manual, but lots of things don't get into the manual that are built in) -- I'm sure that when I reconnect the external drive -- all should work fine, but since I have a full dataset on this HD as well and have just purchased another HD exclusively for backup purposes -- I've got to get a handle on how to point Hoster towards the correct drive. Thanks |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
change your target. make hoster look in your hard drive for the files.
|
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
Target is the local Hard Drive.
|
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
you should keep all the hoster files in the mtu folder on the main hard drive.
c:/programs/microtech/hoster. not your usb drive when you set it up, it sounds like you chose the usb drive to store all you hoster files ( not just your .kma's) i mean like the bucket & the songs.mbd & your song books. you need to change this. you should have chosen all hosters default settings, then when you were ready to import you could choose the usb drive for your destination for your .kma's hope this helps, im not at my computer that has hoster on it. :) |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
It sounds like you used the external hard drive to play drom, or import to then copied them to the internal hard drive.
The songs database writes in the database where the files are located. if this is the case. disconnect the usb drive, and do a rebuild songs database and make sure the pop up box has the correct path shown for this location. then everything should work ok. |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
As Gduns stated, just Rebuild your Songs database and it will work.
|
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
Can't 'Rebuild Songs Datbase' -- Hoster blows up before allowing anything to be done. :f
I have a local dataset on the local HD and have used it before -- this happened after I disconnected the USB HD w/ all the 'mobile' songs so the laptop go to a GIG. Thanks for all the help -- I need to reconnect the USB HD and see if hoster is 'happy' -- of course I can also remap my local HD's location to what Hoster is looking for -- but that's another story! :r |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
'Rebuild Songs Datbase' ....... when the first window opens, you have to tell it where the files are on the internal hard drive. If you have to untill it starts leave the usb drive connected. but you should have no problem after you set the source directory for the .kma files.

Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
like i said before,
i think when you installed hoster the first time, you selected the usb drive for all your files. you should have defaulted to : C:\Program Files\Micro Technology Unlimited\Hoster can you verify this PRM ? |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
Fixed! :)
Once I attached the external (USB) Drive -- Hoster opened up and allowed me to manuver --- had lots of fun -- Hoster didn't want to pick the file folder on the local HD that had the kma files on it -- It wanted to stay @ C:\ -- Finally let it build the database -- it said 'OK' -- But when attempted to 'add song' -- Hoster still looked for the external drive -- Finally attempted another rebuild -- it finally let me pick c:\hoster-songs. Now on the 'window' I have both my external as well as my internal locations (Had to delete the reference to c:\). Guess this is a learning curve regarding having backups and how they will work. Thanks for all the advice. |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
Remove the reference to the external hard drive, then rebuild again...... if you have dup's between it will only reference 1 or the other.
Yes, you can remove the reference to the external hard drive (look in the manual) |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
Why remove the reference? -- :?
After having Hoster not even see the file folder where the songs were :? -- I don't think I want to delete any reference to the 2 places I keep the kma files stored. I have this now on the laptop as well (references to 2 folders - external/internal) -- and it works great -- for personal appearance gigs -- I copy the kma files to the local HD on the laptop and rebuild the database pointing towards it -- (Keeps me from toting/setting up the external for small jobs) What didn't work -- Hoster completely failed when the external HD was removed -- I would have expected the program to allow me in to reset the path towards wherever the data was -- but it errored out before starting. I think the database in Hoster is been built around MS Access -- I have done very little w/Access -- I'm a Dataease Person -- I learned Database programming and all the quirks w/ Dataease :f -- Guess I'm learning some of the quirks of Access. |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
what kind of computer are you using?? is it an MTU computer ?? or is it an off the shelf computer that you used for your personal use ?

Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
It's Custom built -- :)
3.5Ghz 512K Ram 300GB HD (2 x Drives both WD) Asus MB 2 x Burners XP Pro OS laptop is HP - NX9010 w/80GB HD XP OS Using External WD - USB for Hoster-Songs Database (my DJ Library is 40+GB, KJ is 20GB) |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
i would put the hoster database on your internal hard drive. you have plenty of space!! it will take years to fill the hard drive up withy karaoke tunes!!
|
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
Because it will have 2 of every song to choose from and god knows which one you will be playing. Besides what is the point.
I load all my songs onto the internal hard drive, and copy them to the laptop for a backup. If i do a show, I dont have to use the external hard drive. (just one more thing to take with you) If the show machine craps out, you have the laptop, and the external drive to play from. Having 2 copies of the same songs fererenced in the database on the same computer is a recipe for problems. |
Re: 2 x Computers / External HD / Hoster Error
I will keep my external HD for the KJ portion -- I have 40GB+ of DJ (Grows 1GB/month)+ the OS + other programs == as 99% of my business is DJ and the KJ portion is sporatic at best (our area has decided that KJ's are worth $50 + Drinks) We've headed into the DJ business rather quickly and profitably -- and w/ the ability to add KJ to any event by plugging in the external -- That's Wonderful!
I'm very happy w/ the external drive -- just not happy w/ how hoster handled the situation when the external drive was removed from the 'host' computer. Regarding the 2 references -- I don't have 'duplicates' showing up -- When you choose 'build database' -- you choose which directory you are using -- If this was such a big issue, why does the program show multiple listings? I use other programs which allow downward file structures -- so everything isn't in one directory -- I haven't tried this yet w /hoster -- but this makes sense to allow things to be properly organized -- really makes it easier to manage your data --- Also from these threads -- it appears that my point was missed early on -- I knew what I had done, and I knew how to fix it-- Just that the program should have allowed me to change the data directory instead of blowing up! Still haven't heard any real response to the program's blowing-up -- |
