microstudio won't see my sound card or my cd writer
 

Just installed a plextor premium cd writer and the whole things gone to pot.
All worked well with the old plextor drive but with the new one installed, Microstudio tells me I have no sound card od CD drive.
Anything obvious here?

I have never heard of this before. I would try uninstalling all of the Plextor software that came on the CD. Then install one piece at a time.

I would say this is what caused a problem somewhere.

I would follow Bryans recommendation of uninstalling the software that came with the Plextor. There are known current issues with the Plextor software, some OS dependent but issues just the same.

I have 4 Plextor CD-rw 48/24/48a units that work fine, 2 on Win2k and 2 on XP Pro.

I have NOT installed the Plextor software because of the conflicts I have experienced with this combination

It seems that the Plextor Premium drive will only work with the latest version of Microstudio, as proved by downloading the demo version!

There were some changes in the new version that allowed my laptops cd to be seen, and on a desktop running XP Pro that would crash on startup allowed the program to run...

Hardware and software... always something there to make them different

There are many problems associated with the latest release of Plextor CDR-WR software. More often than not, you can run your burner without installing a single piece of software for a particular drive. Uninstalling all Plextor software could make your burner run flawlessly.
