Problem after reformatting computer

After reformatting my computer, I tried to open Hoster. It came up with an error message. Error Number: 0x80040702 Description: Failed to load DLL:_ismtu setup will now terminate. It worked before I reformatted. I have XP with Service Pack 3. I haven't tried other MTU products. Does anyone have any idea where I go from here? I would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,
Ernie

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Roy, Thank you for helping me... it worked. Roy I hate to take advantage of you, but you seem to be the smartest person I know about computers. Thank God we have you on MTU. I am still having lots of problems after formatting. I have ask on a lot of forums how to do what I'm about to ask you, but no answers. I would like to blow away EVERYTHING on my hard drive and then reinstall windows XP like it was when I bought it. How do I do that???? I realize this is a Hoster forum, so if you don't feel it's appropriate I'll have no bad feelings at all, and I mean that.

Thanks,
Ernie

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Ernie, thanks for the compliments, I might understand MTU products quite well but to tell you how to restore your computer to it's original state is another thing :e
It depends on a number of factors, sometimes you are supplied with an original installation disc, sometimes the hard drive has a hidden partition with the original files, in which case there is normally a program listed in the Start/programs list named something like restore or recovery, I can't tell you exactly you would need to read up literature that came with your computer.
Other times your asked if you would like to make a recovery disc to free up more room on your hard drive, so if you did something like that when you first purchased your computer, unless you still have those disc's or the original installation disc I'm afraid your up the creek.
The only other option I can think of is to buy a new copy of Microsoft windows and that's not cheap.
So the first thing is to see if you have a recovery program listed.
If you have still got the original installation disc or backups you may have start a one time boot by turning on the computer then hit the F12 <F12>key just before the first screen appears to make it boot from the CD disc, if you don't catch it in time you will have to let it load as normal and shut down and try again.
It can be a long job reinstalling as if it is a few years old there can be a lot of Microsoft updates to install as well which has to be done over the Internet so I would make this a last resort.

What are your other problems you are having ?:f

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Roy, Thank you so VERY much!!! Some of the problems I'm having is... Add or remove programs won't open, Many other programs do the same, the screen will go black and sometimes it will reappear and sometimes I have to restart the computer. To be honest, I have sooo much junk, and so many programs I don't need, that I'm ready to start fresh. I'm retired, so I have the time. I also have everything backed up, and have the original disc. I do have my laptop, so I don't have to bust my butt to get it done fast. I do thank you for all the help and information you have given me, not just for today, but for a long time now.

Thanks Again,
Ernie

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

How much free space left on your C: drive ?
could be ther's not enough space left. Windows uses some hard drive space for tempory memory.
Have you done a defrag hard drive or check disc.
Right click the C: drive Properties/Tools then choose the options there. Don't select refortmat if you see it :e

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Roy, I just got on to email and saw your post. Last night I reformatted my hard drive. Everything is loading without a problem except for (naturally) Hoster, Microstudio and keyrite. I get an error message, that Microsoft .Net Framework v2.0 is missing, and it can't operate without it. Where can I get it??? I've found things that have a lot of choices to download, but no explanation as to what these choices are. Any ideas???? I won't be looking at mail for awhile, I've have to get away from this computer for awhile.

Thanks,
Ernie

Roy, I just wanted you to know I bought an internal hard drive while my wife and were out. So now,,,, I'm starting fresh!!! I want you to know how very much I have appreciated everything you've done to help. I wish I could say the next you need help, just let me know, but with your knowledge of computers and Hoster, I don't think that's going to happen.

Thanks again,
Ernie

Roy, I installed my hard drive, my Windows XP, and everything is like brand new...... Well, not exactly!! I downloaded a bunch of stuff, and everything worked.... Then! I went to download Hoster, and this came up again.....I get an error message, that Microsoft .Net Framework v2.0 is missing, and it can't operate without it. Where can I get it??? I did a new download on a new disc. Why is Net Framework v2.0 not there???? I'm really ticked! Before I get real upset and junk this thing, is there anywhere I can this Net Framework
v2.0? Right now I feel like this thing is kicking my butt and winning. Sorry to unload, but it's been a really long day. After I send this I'm going to bed.

Thanks for listening,
Ernie

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Did you do all the windows updates as described when you purchased your version?
This can be a time consuming thing if re-installing older versions of XP.
These are the changes if installing the latest version on XP:
http://www.mtu.com/upgrades/hoster/xp-changes.htm

I would have thought it would have installed it automatically when doing the updates, but here is a link to the microsoft website for Net Framework v2.0.

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

I copied this from the XP windows update instructions, note that you must be using Windows Internet explorer for this.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You MUST ONLY use Windows Internet Explorer to do Windows Updates. You CANNOT USE: Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Netscape or any other Browser. To run IE, left click Start button > All Programs > Internet Explorer.
Windows XP Updates are found at http://update.microsoft.com

You MUST do the Windows Updates to run MTU Hoster 4.xx or higher. Many users who had weird problems say these disappeared after updating Windows.
  1. When the page above appears, left click on the Custom button. Your computer will be scanned for what updates are not installed.
  2. In the left column, select all items under Optional Software.
  3. Left click on Install to start the installation.
  4. Once the updates are installed, if you see a message to restart the computer, you must do this before continuing.
  5. Then go through the same process again until it shows 0 items to be installed under Optional Software updates and Critical Updates.

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Roy, There is no custom button anywhere on the page.

Thanks,
Ernie

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Roy, No custom button, but when I watched the video a box opened, like the box that opened when I was on the site. The person clicked it and then I saw the Custom button. I had 82 things to download. After the download I still have the same problem trying to open any of the MTU products.

Thanks,
Ernie

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Yes, they have altered it a bit, it does show that in the video.

When you first get on the update site, select" Check for updates", after a while you will see a result saying so many important updates & so many optional updates, if you select the important updates it should show you a list of them with tick boxes to select which to import, as Hoster instructions tell you to import all updates you should select them all. and the same for the optional updates, install all updates except hardware updates.
Now before you do this there is a selection on the left for" View update History", be worth looking in there first to see if it is showing" Net Framework v2.0" and if it is, does it show as failed status? If there is no sign of it in the list then when you look in the list of available updates see if you can see it listed there.

I recently restored my own computer and had to instal 144 updates. it took me all day.
So don't exspect it to be done in 5 mins.

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Roy,
I downloaded net framework v2.0. Now when I try to open Hoster it comes up with...... Failed to load DLL: _ismtu
Shouldn't that be in Hoster? Should I reinstall Hoster?

Thanks Roy,
Ernie

Re: Problem after reformatting computer

Bryant,
Thanks, that did the trick. I was able to download Hoster and Microstudio. It wouldn't let me download Keyrite, becausethere was an error, so I wrote up a ticket explaining that I had tried reformatting my hard drive and screwed it up, and then found out I could take out the original hard drive and put in a new one. As you probably read above that wasn't a piece of cake either.

Thanks again,
Ernie
