Windows 7 Question ...
I realize this is not a Hoster question, but it's been bugging me and I haven't been able to find an answer...
I'm hoping someone here can answer it! Does anyone know how to lock the Windows 7 desktop icons in place? I do not like them all down the left side of the screen and move them across the top in the order I want them. They will stay for a short period and then sometime on boot-up, they will scramble and put them all down the left side of the screen again. I even gave up and sorted them on the left side of the screen in the order I wanted them. Again, on boot-up after a few times, they scrambled again! It is very frustrating having to hunt for the icon you need after they've scrambled!!! Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me... |
Re: Windows 7 Question ...
There doesn't seem to be a lock option for Windows 7. I think the only real option is a third party application one of which is "IconRestorer" Do a google search or try this one.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop...Restorer.shtml I have not used it myself, I have had Icons move around but it usually happens if I messed around with screen resolution or something like that. One thing you can try Right click desktop and select "Personalize" then select "Desktop icons" then untick the box for "Allow themes to change desktop icons" |

The first option worked temporarily, but last night when I booted up for my show, they scrambled again! Sigh!!!! Guess I'll reluctantly try that software you recommended... There's just gotta be a way to stop the scramble... |
Re: Windows 7 Question ...
Roy,
Here's where Ihad to go to find it: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-84200.html Will let you know later how (if) works... |
Re: Windows 7 Question ...
As I said before, I have only had a problem if I mess about with screen resolution. I was just wondering if you have some program like some games tend to change screen resolutions although usually return the screen to default when finished. Is there some program in your startup sequence that is causing this. Have a look at the items showing on your task bar, you may find a clue there. If they can't be prevented there from loading you should be able to do so by typing msconfig.exe in the search box that shows after pressing start. then execute it, when the dialog opens choose the startup tab then untick the items you want to prevent starting on boot up then apply and OK. This can also help speed up booting, just don't stop essential items.

I only use that computer for Hoster and Microstudio. And, I never change screen resolution. I have downloaded IconRestorer 1.0.8.1 and am using it. I will let you know later how that works out. http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-84200.html Thanks for the information... |
Re: Windows 7 Question ...
Roy,
I had my first screen scramble, after downloading IconRestorer, happen Monday night when I booted up for a show. I went to IconRestorer and restored the last saved version and everything went right back where I had put them and saved them. Everytime you move any Icon's, you need to re-save them... I couldn't ask for a better utility! Thank you so much for the information! IconRestorer is the thing to have!!! |
Re: Windows 7 Question ...
Roy,
Well, I spoke too soon... Tonight when I booted up for my show, my icons were scrambled (again). I went to IconRestore to restore them and it WOULD NOT restore them! Oh well, back to the drawing board... |

Dale, Yes, by scrambled I mean they all go to the left side of the screen in columns and are placed wherever Win7 decides to put them! No, the display size never changes! However, today when I booted up and went to InconRestorer and did another "restore," they returned to my last saved state. Last night they would not restore even though I did a restore three times! As you so eloquently put it one time "Gremlins," don't you just love'em... |
Re: Windows 7 Question ...
I'm sure you will tell me you have already looked at these but anyway, when you right click on the desktop and the window pops out there are two selections for the icons settings, one being the "View" which on mine I shows I have "Medium Icons" selected and only one item ticked which is "Show desktop icons" all other tickboxes are clear.
The second selection after right clicking desktop is "Sort by" from this selection I don't have anything ticked. What settings have you got for both of these selections ? |

The only thing I have different from your setup is I have "align to grid" ticked... |
Re: Windows 7 Question ...
I found this if you want to try it, do so at your own risk, it seems it rebuilds the icon cache. Although this link states Vista it is also for Windows 7.
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/ho...windows-vista/ Dont click the download link, thats an advert for another program, read the instructions below it and decide if you want to try it. Might be an idea to create a restore point before trying it.:r |
Re: Windows 7 Question ...
Roy,
Thanks for the info, but I'm going to stick with IconRestore for a little while longer. However, I have saved that link for future reference... |
