Moving playlists to new computer

Hi there. I have just installed the latest hoster on my new laptop. Went smoothly and all my backed up KMA files went on beautifully.

I saved my playlists from old and have put them in a "playlist" folder in hoster.
When I click on "open" it lists all the playlists but won't play any of the old ones, only the 2 new ones that I have put on.

Would love some help as I have lots of playlists and don't fancy doing them all again.

Cheers Kathy

They need to be in C:\MTU\Hoster along with the Songs.mdb database.
I am assuming you rebuilt the database when you moved all the KMA files to the new computer.
What do you see when you open the old lists?

Yes I did rebuild the database and then copied the playlists into the hoster file. When that didn't work I started a new folder for the playlists in hoster but no good. When I click on open they all show but when I try to open any of the old ones they don't open at all - blank playlist.

Found this in the manual and have tried that too but no luck.

Open... lets you choose a saved Playlist to appear in the Playlist window to play instantly. Note: If you upgraded and have older Hoster 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0 Playlists, they are expanded with the new 4.0 features with -4 appended before the .hst (ex: Joes Bar Friday-4.hst).:f

When you imported your songs to your new computer, did you import them from identical directories that you used on previous computer ?

If you have them all on an external drive is it using the same volume letter as your original?

Did you back up your KMA's to a different ext. drive? If so, as Roy said, that drive MUST HAVE the same Drive Letter in order to use old Playlists. Hoster remembers the PATH to your songs & it must be the same. You can manually change the Drive Letter so that it is the same as the old one & make it remain that way, so it can be read from whatever computer you are using.

Re: Moving playlists to new computer

I did move them to an external hard drive from my old computer so the drive (path) letter went from C to E (if that's what you mean). Then moved to new laptop where again the drive letter is C. Doesn't that refer to Where it is? I'm not sure I understand what you mean and I don't know what a volume letter is.

How would you manually change a drive letter? and wouldn't that mean that it's location is now somewhere else on your computer?

Apart from the drive letter the file names are identical to what they were on previous computer and external hard drive and new laptop.
C:\MTU\Hoster\Playlists

Tried also the "-4" thing and that didn't work.

Thanks for your help

The "Playlist (.hst) files" still need to be in C: in the same Hoster folder they were in before. I am referring to the "music" files only. Where were they to begin with & where are they now? The "music" files that Hoster plays from an "old Playlist" need to be on a drive with the exact same drive letter they were on before (the path used in the Playlist). Example: All my Songs were originally on an external hd that was only 160mg. I moved them all to a new ext. hdd that is 500mg. My original drive was "K", so my new drive also had to be named "K" because that is the "path" followed by Hoster when you access old playlists.

How to change a path is in also in the Manual. Go to: START, then right-click on My Computer, click on "Manage", then on the left side-see "Disk Management" and click on it. On the right, you will see all the drives that are connected to your machine - Right-click on the one you want to change - you will see "Change Drive Letter and Path". Pick the letter you want it to be (the same letter as the old drive that had your songs on before).

Re: Moving playlists to new computer

If all your song files were originally in your C:/Mtu/Kma folder then they have to follow that same path on your new computer. Whatever file path you used to index them on your old computer, you must use the same file path for the old playlists to find them.

When you open them from the Hoster file tab, if you scroll across the window to the size column, if they are only showing 1Kb then they are empty no data in them in which case you probably haven't copied them correctly.
At this moment in time I can't think of anything else to help.

All my song files are in that KMA file and work fine. The playlists are not empty because I already checked the file sizes for that. I have just installed Hoster on a second laptop and have exactly the same problem. Songs work fine but playlists don't. Go figure??????????

Something is different:? Are you now using Windows 7? Maybe there is something special for it. I moved Hoster from XP to Vista and all my old playlists from 2006 still work on the current version of Hoster. As long as the "Path" is the same, I know of no other reason for them not to work. I don't know what else to suggest...sorry:s

Thanks for that, I didn't see your response when I last looked only Roy's. My old computer was C and so is my new computer. The external hardrive that was used between them is E. Old laptop was XP new ones are Windows 7.

While I'm here and getting help, can you please explain how I get songs into the "singers" list? I am new to this function and have managed list singers names but don't know how to save songs to their name.

Just click "S+" when adding a song to the playlist & it will save to the Singer's list.

Re: Moving playlists to new computer

Kathy when you set up this new computer did you complete all the actions required for Windows 7 and Hoster?
Here is the link:
http://www.mtu.com/upgrades/hoster/windows7-changes.htm

It maybe because these playlists were copied to the new computer that Windows 7 is not giving Hoster permission to open them, so they come up as blank. The link above has steps that should correct this.
