Hoster 4.32. Slow processor speed. Dell XPS 140 Laptop.
 

Just upgraded to Hoster 4.22? and now 4.32. Jumped from 3.316 to 4... versions. Did all the recommended turn offs/turn ons per the 'do this' instructions, etc. Believe 4.32 seems to have solved the momentary lyrics hang-up problem I kept having. What still occurs is the splash screen warning 'your processor is only .78ghz' or similar when launching Hoster 4.32.

Setup is an April 2006 Dell XPS 140 1.73ghz cpu, WinXP sp3 Media Version, 2gb ram, 50gb hdd about 90% full, and no other open programs running. I am aware of the need for 15-20% hdd free space and can/do use and external hdd, but I don't see how this would affect my processing speed, per se.... Same occurs on battery or plugged in power. Program will run fair well despite this 'warning' message. Playing of songs and lyrics seem to work normal. Have used it for a full show and fair extensive at home testing with no real problems since I upgrdd. Haven't used the backgrnd music function or the screen announcement features yet as I don't utilize them in my show for now.

I'm wondering... do the Dell/s have an 'idle' feature that I've got activated or similar, and it only spools up based on processor load? Something that causes Hoster when opening up to read a reduced processor speed? To be registering less than half of my indicated processor speed does bother me somewhat. Especially not knowing why for, etc.

Posted yesterday about the best choice between ATI or NVidia video cards in a new dual processor laptop I plan to purchase shortly after the Holiday period. Would really like to keep this old single processor laptop on hand as a backup, etc.

Any thoughts or ideas about this Hoster 'warning' and what I might can do for the single cpu laptop to extend it's usability?

The reason for having the free space on your drive is the computer uses this as a temporary swap space for memory which is what your virtual memory is, if you don't have enough virtual memory this could slow your computer down. The following is printed in the Manuel for recommended settings:

1. Click into the Initial size: field and enter the value (3055 MB recommended if you have 2GB RAM).
2. Click into the Maximum size: field and enter 4096 or up to 2x your installed RAM (MB).

With regard extending the life of this computer I would suggest fitting a bigger Hard drive, you can get these relatively cheap now up to about 320 GB for an internal. With you on the virtual memory, and shoulda mentioned that. Almost dead on with 3058 and 4096 set up respectively. BWRO..before warranty ran out several months ago.. I had Dell techs on two occasions via the virtual route try to figure out why the cpu didn't or would register as not running up to full speed. Either they didn't know, or being a poss language conflict, didn't understand what I was trying to get them to do, etc. Nothing showed up as being out of the ordinary, etc. All in all, the laptop seems to work as it should. And that is the biggest reason I'd kinda like to keep it around for a while, ya know? Seems like so many things now require or recommend the dual processor capability these days. Heck, ya can't even buy a little Logitech webcam that doesn't need a dually to do it's thing correctly...lol.

Got an estimate or two from a couple real good LAN guys I know about putting in a new hdd. May just get up the nerve to attempt it myself and save the 'labor', etc.

I have an old Dell Inspiron 5150, bought it around 2004, fitted it with 1.5 Gb memory and 160Gb hard drive, I was still using it until February this year as my Show laptop. It still performs alright for Karaoke but used to get a bit hot if I ran a few videos consecutively. I now have it as my backup, I'm running the model in my signature now which I am very pleased with.:)

I think this has been identified and adjusted for processor speed, however it was just recently so 4.32 would not have that correction. I will check with MTU Monday and see if that was the case. Meanwhile as long as everything is working just keep doing what you have been doing.
Roy is right about the hard drive. On any of my show machines I try to maintain 25 -50% free space on the hard drive. The tighter it gets for space the slower a computer runs. It also makes defragmenting a much longer chore for the computer.

One of my lapyops did the same thing with processoer speed, I had some tech guy look at it and he put in a program that locked it in at maximum speed. I later found out how to do it with the preference settings but can't remember. I think i googled up Dell laptop processor speed running slow and a bunch of related answers came up.
