what o.s do you have on that new Dell that you bought if you don't mind me asking, from what i heard windows 7 is like vista but with all the fixes , when i bought my 2 laptops ( E1505 /1405 )a year ago it came with a vista upgrade, a tech support friend of mine that works at Dell told not to even bother upgrading ...

facts about upgrading xp to 7

just got my pc world mags. and this is what i read "you can't do an " inplace" upgrade from xp to 7, you'll have to do what's called " clean " install, which means restoring backed up data, re-creating settings throughout windows, and re-installing all apps.

Here are the system requirements for Windows 7 :

1Ghz or faster 32-bit ( x86 ) or 64-bit (64-bit) processor
1GB of RAM ( 32-bit) or 2GB of RAM (64-bit)
16GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher drive.

" and make sure to make a disc image of your windows xp to revert back "

MTU is doing some testing (very little) on Windows 7 and there are a couple of testers who are working with it but I don't think it will be recommended at this point in time.

If Billy is right, it won't take long for Windows 7 to catch up with Vista.

Just trying to help. :)

The system comes with vista 64 bit and the free upgrade comes out at the end of October. Dell said that I wouldn't HAVE to upgrade, but I will have that option.

Are you only using this computer for Hoster? I know that Microstudio does not like 64 bit systems.
To expand on what Billyo said XP to Windows 7 upgrade won't work so requires stripping XP and clean load of Windows 7. Vista to Windows 7 upgrade does work according to Microsoft. The reason this works is that Windows 7 is Vista based same way XP was NT based.
MTU has done beta testing with Windows 7 and has not run across any problems with it. Most likely this is because they worked so hard to get Vista working and both are the same basic system.
