hoster 4.08 error 1706 plus won't read CD

:e

First, "Near the end of downloading 4.08 I get this message: "error 1706. No valid source could be found for product hoster. The window installer cannot continue"

I ignored it...as I saw in another thread....but,

What really gets me is that now after updates since 3.19 Hoster says my drive is bad....I have used it countless times with no problems...

What's up now.....Here I'am adding another problem to my list of many

HELP !!!

BOB:f

rmryanjr February 27th, 2009 06:20 PM

to add....yes I have all the XP updates ...and have done this due to another problem I'm having....no register problems , no virus problems, no adware problems.

I had this error when loading onto my Vista machine but ignored it. It all seems to be working alright.

rmryanjr February 27th, 2009 06:36 PM

I did too, the most important thing is that hoster now doesn't recognized my cd drive when it has since 3.19 and never had a problem

Read this post: http://forum.mtu.com/showthread.php?...ighlight=drive

What I would try first is load 3.34 which comes with all versions of 4.xxx and test your drive with this first. If that doesn't work try Jim's idea in the above thread.

The 1706 error is a Microsoft Installer error and even occurs with their own programs. So far no one has found the solution. The good news is it does not cause any problems with the install. If you do a Remove and Install it doesn't occur.
Now as far as you drive, what brand/ model is it? There may be a driver or firmware update needed.
Is the drive showing up correctly in Windows Explorer?
Is it showing as bad in Hoster or not listed at all?
If it just shows as bad, open Hoster 3.4 and go to the CD/DVD drive default, put a clean CDG disk in and use the Detect Again to try to get it to read.

One of my computer cdroms came up "bad" after installing 4.07. I just clicked retest and it changed to "good". Didn't even need a CDG.

Go to Tools/CD DVD Drives

Hey Bob and Roy, what location was the hostersetup.exe in when you ran it? I am just looking for something on the 1706 error. Dale claims I'm tilting at windmills, but just humor me and I'll go away:)

Dale,

Ok, That worked by opening 3.4 and doing a detect and now yes 4.08 reads my disc...thanks

Not quite sure if this is what you mean. Hoster 4.08 .exe was in folder C:\Program Files\Micro Technology Unlimited\Hoster. But I just followed the instructions from the download link. Chose save, then run. :?:)

I think he means what location did you download the setup file to and then clicked it to instal.

All of mine have been either in "My Documents" or on my desktop just depending on whether I moved it before installing (I download everything to my desktop and usually move it to my docs)

Just so you have some data to tilt with I store mine on my D:\ on my main computer and install on same computer as well as two others from there.

I did some testing on this last night. When you see the CD/DVD window just hit cancel and the drive should work. I saw this once but hit "the magic number" and have to wait for a reset to verify that this works every time.

Just hit cancel then try to import a CD+G to show that the CD/DVD device is working OK.

hoster 4.08 error 1706 plus won't read CD

This is my situation :
I installed hoster v4.08 (upgraded v.4.03) and almost at the end of the installation, this code 1706 showed up and installation didn't go thru. I reboot and start Hoster and Dr. Watson (crash) won't start the program. So, i installed back v4.03 and works again ( no error code). I tried to re-installed back 4.08 and give me the same result and now I.m stuck with v4.03. Now I tried at my show computer with v4.06, installed v4.08 and gives me the same result so, I got stuck with v4.06, too. Not too worried about the situation but if somebody is saying that this is a windows problem, why is it that it only happen with Hoster. Somebody at MTU should should give us a solutions for this. I'm not new with computer so I'm gonna research this problem..Just remember, this code just pop up recently and hoster is both working on my 2 computer but with the old version. And guys, I did what you have recommended but to no avail, no good result. So, My frustration is building up right now...................

marklwood March 2nd, 2009 11:44 AM

Bendrew, on the 1706 error. I have been doing a little testing and have a theory. Try moving the Hostersetup.exe to C:\. See if you still get the error. The other possibility is a registry modification which I don't want to reccomend until I am ABSOLUTELY sure it will work.

This error is a Microsoft Installer (which MTU uses to create the setup files for their programs) error and it happens with their own program installs. It is not a constant error though. I get it on all 3 of my computers but only if I do the upgrade. If I remove and install it won't do it. However it is not a fatal error and does not normally keep you from opening the program. If MTU had a solution then they would certainly pass it on. This is not just a recent error it has been around for a while now but not everyone is getting it, so if you are just now getting it then you have been lucky.
What is the error message you get from Dr Watson when you try to open the program? That will help track down the cause for it not opening.
