oh well..i wanted to upgrade to 4.0 and since sp3 is needed to to run 4.0 better, i decided to update my back-up laptop late last night, and guessed what " blue screen "again !!!, my back-up has intel proc. 1.5 gb mem. only things i have in it was my itunes, hoster 3.317 , vcd and pcdj,i dont use it for anything else..so , i guessed once i get a new hhd, i guessed i wont be getting 4.0 and i am not trying to scare anybody!!!!!

Billyo why do you have to get a new HHD. Just reinstall XP and everything else you had on it. The hard drive is not destroyed. At the worst it will have to be reformatted and reloaded. Physically the drive is ok. If you don't understand how to do this get some local help from a computer repair place.
Have you checked Microsoft tech support (online) to see if there is a way to recover without having to reload?
Did you follow the steps in the Microsoft article I sent you and install their patch before you did SP3?

for reason i keep getting the same problem , like the first time i updated to sp3, my 250 gb hhd went down to 80 gb, after i got everything reloaded (i only loaded what came with my laptop ),which is what i had when i bought my laptop new..it's easier for me to start fresh, replaced the old drive get me another hhd, so that way if i update to sp3 i will only have whatever came with my laptop, no third party software, then maybe i'll be succesful updating sp3 ang maybe upgrade to 4.0

In most cases the cause for this is the drive image (preinstalled or recovery disk) was created on an Intel based machine then deployed on an AMD based computer. This is fast and cheap for the manufacturers but causes a problem with the service pack installation. If your computer is an AMD based computer and the BSOD stop error was 0x00000007E then that is your problem. If you do a reload from a recovery disk you may still be in the same situation as the recovery disk has the same drive image.


If you can boot into safe mode there is a simple fix.
  1. Restart computer and press F8 key repeatedly until Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
  2. Choose Safe Mode.
  3. Browse to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.
  4. Find a file named “intelppm.sys” and rename it to “oldintelppm.old“.
  5. Restart.
Of course if you reload from a Windows disk then manually load all the drivers you won't have this problem.

i will be reloading from from window disk, can't do it now, i got a show in 3 hrs, i still have my main laptop so ill be fine..will work on it tomorrow..thanks for the instructions..
