can't access search screen

I am using an old HP lap top with Windows XP, and a newer HP desk top as my back up. I am installing my KMA files on a new Maxtor 500 GB external hard drive. Installation went well on both. I downloaded the KMA files using the desk top since the lap top doesn't have adaquate memory to make a clean transfer. My problem is when I plugged in the lap top too the external hard drive all went well for a little while then all of a sudden I couldn't get the search screen to appear. I could see it on the tool bar as being open but couldn't get it to show. when I would minimize Holster main screen the search screen on the tool bar would disappear and wouldn't reappear until I maxamized the Holster main screen. Another thing that must be noted is that when the search screen was open and before there was a problem I typed in "*" to get a list of all songs in the data base to make sure they were accessable. Nothing i do including turning off the lap top and back on changes this. All help appreciated.

Not sure what you are saying.

Database search won't work or disappears when ext HD is connected or when Hoster is minimized?? :?

There is a button on the main screen of Hoster. It says search. you press this button when you want to search the data base for a song. When you press this button a screen is supposed to appear that you type in the song or singer or something about the song you are looking for to get a response from the data base. When I press this button the screen does not appear so i can type the information. I can see the screen on the tool bar but not on the desk top.

What is the location of your Songs.mdb (the database) file?
Has the external drive changed drive letters?

You will need to reset your Hoster to default settings (Version 4 will have a control to do this, but I don't think 3.321 had this iuncluded). The way to do this is by deleting settings in the registry. Here are the steps to follow.

<DD>WARNING! DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! Be sure you follow this exactly. If you delete the wrong Registry Keys, Windows on your computer could be damaged, requiring it to be re-installed. <DD>Fix: Delete Hoster's Persistence Registry Keys.
  1. Left click the Start Menu and click Run.
  2. Type in regedit and click OK or Open.
  3. Go to the very top of the Registry Editor. It you already see the Registry Keys expanded below, skip this step and go to the next step. Click the + beside My Computer.
  4. Click the + Beside HKEY_CURRENT_USER
  5. Click the + beside SOFTWARE
  6. Click the + beside Micro Technology Unlimited
  7. Click the + beside Hoster
  8. Click Default to select it. WARNING! Be VERY careful to have this exact location selected. If not and you proceed, you could damage your Windows installation, requiring it to be re-installed to fix it. BE VERY CAREFUL! With Default selected, press the Delete Key Click Yes when it asks you if you are sure.
  9. Click the X in the Top Right corner to close the Registry Editor.
  10. Open Hoster. It will be as if you started from scratch.

This correctly defines your problem.

This correctly defines how to solve your problem.

Hoster 4.0 does have a Tools menu command to "Reset" all displays back to a visible area in the monitor. We have error checking that is supposed to run when Hoster runs, forcing all windows to be visible, but clearly it isn't working in your case.

Are you running Hoster 3.321 or a prior version? That could make a difference as this "reset" code was added in later versions. :?

Two things, I have had the same problem.

Right click the toolbar icon for search and simply restore or open.

Right click an empty spot on the toolbar and unlock it, then click on the search window.

Now for the easy part, to avoid this simply grab the window drag it down out of the way. The above messages no doubt work.
