Hoster Shutting Down - Stopped Working: Upgrade DirectX and WMP

Last night during my show, Hoster stopped working four times. I've been running Hoster for about two months with this happening very few times, sometimes not at all. I have not made any changes on my laptop (nothing added or removed) and I wasn't doing anything when it stopped (searching for songs, singers, etc.). :m

It has stopped only a couple of times before during my shows. Thank goodness it never stops during a song. It's between songs when it does stop working. I can open Hoster back up and everything is fine. It also stopped one time last night while I was playing music before the show (backgound music).

Does anyone have any idea what is happening?

Are all your music and Karaoke files on your C drive ?
If so what size is your C drive and how much free space is left?
I ask this as Windows uses some of the hard drive space as a swap file and if you run low on space could cause problems. Also your graphics card is integrated so shares some of the computers memory.

Roy,

Yes, all my Karaoke and Music is on my C drive. It is a 320GB with 211GB of free space left. (~65% free)

Would I be better off running from a external drive? (I have two as back up's)

Not as long as you have about 25-50% free space.

Re: Hoster Shutting Down - Stopped Working

I kept having the same problem on my HP laptop after I upgraded to Windows 7.
So I purchased a new Ruggedized Laptop from MTU, thinking that this should stop the problem. I had done everything that I could to stop this from happening on my HP. Well guess what this Laptop is doing it also. Last night during my show it stopped three times. Yes I am glad it does it at the end of a song and not during the song.
So I have no idea what is causing this problem. Buying the Laptop from MTU didn't fix the problem so who knows?

Susan,

It's nice to know I'm not the only one with this problem, but as with you, it's still a problem.

The only thing I can add is I keep the Singers search feature and the Song search feature open continuously during my show for quick access. I get tired of having to open them over and over. :m

It might help to narrow down the problem if you can note if a specific type of file is playing before the shut down, like CDGCDG HDZIP HDMP3G. If you can note which song was playing at the time and can check it out when you get home. It might give MTU a bit more to go on.

Re: Hoster Shutting Down - Stopped Working

Roy,
I don't quite understand what you're referring to because I play my Karaoke straight from my hard drive (KMA) files. The files names CDGCDG HDZIP HDMP3G don't really mean anything to me. All my songs come from CDG's.

However, I will start documenting which songs are playing when this happens.

Mine are KMA files on the hard drive.

Sounds like yours are all the same type, so probably won't help in this case. I have attached a screen shot just to show what I meant. It shows in the type column.
In your case it should show as "CDCDG" so if they are all the same it can't be singled out to a specific type. :m

Back to the drawing board.:?

Re: Hoster Shutting Down - Stopped Working

When during (time of show) your shows is the computer locking up?

Have either of you tried adding a cooling pad under the laptops? These help them stay cooler.
Also, depending on how dirty or smokey the environment is where you play, they may be getting dirty inside which will contribute to heat.

When was the last time you both did the custom updates from Microsoft? They put out new ones every week and many do fix bugs in operating system. Since Windows 7 is still pretty new I am sure there are lots of bugs that need fixing.

Re: Hoster Shutting Down - Stopped Working

Dale,
I have my laptop up on a tilting stand with a mesh bottom and I also have a cooling pad under it. And ... where I play is finally smoke free!

I have had my laptop only about three months. I have not looked for any updates from MicroSoft because I keep it off-line as much as possible.

Everytime you upgrade Hoster (which does require being on-line) you should upgrade from Microsoft prior to installing. Also at least once a month you should get Microsoft upgrades. Remember that Hoster uses Windows Media Player for it's operation and this is intwined in a lot of Microsoft functions.

Dale,
I went online and updated Windows 7 with all the current updates. Actually, I'm online with my Hoster computer now, something I rarely do (for fear of viruses).

When I do my Thursday night show, (currently my only show) we'll see what happens...

Thanks for the advice! :)

Re: Hoster Shutting Down - Stopped Working

I did my show last night (Thursday 5/13) and Hoster shut down three times. The first time was before the show while playing music through Backgound Audio. I wasn't on stage when it stopped, so I know it wasn't anything that I did to cause the problem. :m

When I noticed the music had stopped, I went on stage and sure enough the screen showed "Hoster Stopped Working!"

Again, the next two times it was after the song(s) had completed and Hoster started back up without any problems. Both times I was not doing anything (searching for songs, etc.) at all within the program.

I'm just baffled... :?

Re: Hoster Shutting Down - Stopped Working

Did you have BA enabled ?
I ask this because you said it stopped working while just playing background music. If this is the case perhaps it has something to do with as the next BA song starts to play. Try it without the BA enabled to see if this is where the problem exists.

Roy.

Are you using the Background Audio and Visualization turned on or just BA?

Re: Hoster Shutting Down - Stopped Working

I have all updates done on my computer, and I am not running BA when it happens to me.

I have sent an email to MTU support to look into this. He may want to contact you each and connect to your computer to see if he can see anything that is causing this.

Re: Hoster Shutting Down - Stopped Working

I start out with BA enabled and never turn it off all night. I am only playing mp3 music (no video involved).

I only use a singers monitor. I do not hook up to any other TV's or monitors in the bar. I do not like for the audience to be looking at anything except the singer. I don't even like singing at places that have more than one TV operating (but I digress). :t

If it will help in solving this problem, I will do my show next week without BA all night, just to see what happens. However, Susan said it happens to her without BA running. :m

I'm open to suggestions and willing to do whatever it takes to resolve this problem... :)
