Question on F Drive

I keep allmy kma files, and only my kma files on an external hard drive, which is "F". I turned on my system and a window opened and said.... Checking file system on F: The type of the file system is Fat32. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. Windows will now check the disk. volume serial number is 09F2-8FB2. Windows is verifying files and folders..... This is the first time this has come up. Does anyone know if I have a problem? Don't want to loose my kma files.

Thanks
Ernie

:c You are probably okay for now. You can never be sure how long a hard drive will last. I would highly recommend that you get a second copy of your kma files either on your c drive or by purchasing another external hard drive to copy them to.

I have mine on 3 different hard drives. I don't ever want to have to reload all those cdg's.:)

Most likely just a small glitch and the system needs to check the drive..Then again it could be the first sign of problems. Either way make sure you have a backup, then if your external dies, switch to the backup.
You may want to check this Thread.

Did you let the Check run and did it show any errors like bad sectors?
If so I would keep an eye on it as this is usually an early indication of failure.
Second thing I would look seriously at is that if this drive is FAT32 it really needs to be updated to NTFS format. Safest way is copy the files off and reformat it in NTFS then restore the files. There is a way to do it without having to remove the files but I have not used it in a very long time and would have toresearch it if you need that.

external drive problem

Ernie, I noticed your post and also use an extrnal 500 gig drive for all of my .kma files. I am having trouble and maybe you have run accross this.i select a song from the playlist and it turns red on left column and a little window pops up and syas; the ( disc ID#) track path is missing. song won't link up with the hard drive.
Could it be that the destination folder in green letters down in the bottom of the "Build song database" window says C:MTU\Hoster\ doesn't exist anywhere in my folder selections. Do I need to create a folder that is called this name? and how if so? Can you help?
Ed

Dale,
If you can find that shortcut let me know. I'll also try to find it. The external hard drive is one of those WD small black ones with 250gig. I did find some bad sectors. The hard drive is only about five months old. Thanks for your help and info.

Ed,
Sorry, but I haven't had any problems like that, and not savy enough to help you out. Hang on, someone will come to your rescue. If they don't, post it again.

drive

thanks for the reply, I'm beginning to think it could be the external drive . I am going to check my buffalo drive with the same computer to seee isf I have the same prblem

Could be the drive letter has changed. Try rebuilding your database and change the folder to the correct drive deleting the C:\MTU\Kma Files from that list.

Thanks Billyo. You saved me having to rack my brain trying to remember how it is done. It has been a long time since I had to convert a drive. :g

Before I do this, I just want to make sure....... I can do this with my kma files still on the drive????

Thanks
Ernie

Sorry I forgot to enter this..... I just want to be sure!
Type:
convert f:/fs:ntfs

Should all hard drives be converted to ntfs, or just the external ones?

Thanks,
Ernie

Your drive with XP on it should already be NTFS. And you are correct on the format of the command.
As I said before back the files up just in case.....

Dale,
I just tried it with the external drive (different external drive) on my desktop, and it came up with.... Enter current volume label for drive L. I put the letter N and it came up with... an incorrect volume label was entered for this device. I don't know what it's looking for. I'm going to try it with my desktop before I try it on my laptop.

Thanks
Ernie

With the drive connected. Right click on it in My Computer or Windows Explorer. The information there will tell you what the Volume Label is. You have to know that to reformat the drive or it won't let you continue.

you're welcome, just a dropped in a bucket, compared to what you and other beta testers has done to help others..

Dale,
I can't find volume label anywhere. When I open Explore and right click the hard drive, I then click properties. I can't find volume label in General, AutoPlay,Tools, hardware or sharing. In Hardware it shows a discription of my hard drives and writer. The external hard drive info for the laptop is WD 2500BEVExternal USB Device...... Is that what I'm looking for???

Thanks,
Ernie

The volume label will be the box at the top of the first page. If it is blank then when running the command leave it blank and go on to next step.

Ernie August 24th, 2008 11:22 AM

Dale,
I feel like a real idiot!!!!! On the first page I was looking for something that said volume label and a box next to it with that information. This morning I saw just a box with... WD Passport. I thought, I'll try it....and it worked!! Thanks for taking the time to help people who are computer challenged. I always appreceite your help.

Thanks,
Ernie
