-   -   Using Norton Ghost 9 To Clone My C:\ Drive (http://forum.mtu.com/showthread.php?t=11073)

madjim- with the Lord December 11th, 2008 06:31 AM

Thanks Dale,
I have the old ribon cables so my show machine does not have raid capabilities.

Beavis,
I will clone my hard drive with Ghost and keep it in the computer, unplugged. I see no use in powering up the copy of the drive if it can't be used in conjunction with my C:\ drive.

Raid sounds like the way to go to me. Since nobody has had a bad experience using it in their show machines, it seems to be the most seamless way to keep an active backup in a computer. I'll PM you.

Thanks everybody for your help in this matter. It was dissapointing to find out that I have been running my shows for over four years with a false sense of security but proves again that GOD takes good care of us.

I may be missing something here, but I see no point in this at all. You would have to go in and connect the drive every time you changed the data on your main drive. If you didn't your back up drive would not be current, so what would be the purpose?

All it takes is a start up disk that you make with Norton, to boot the pc and clone the backup disc to the failed c:

An option that would permit you to boot to the back-up drive may be to use a bootable USB drive as the back-up drive. Here's some dope on that:

Dunno, as I have no personal experience with it, but it seems plausible.

Hey George,
I'm going to go with the raid set up. I see two major advantages to this:

1. The raid system will keep a mirrored copy my C:\ drive on the second drive. Any changes I make to the C:\ drive will be made to the second drive as well. I won't have to connect and disconnect the drives to add new data.

2. If my C:\ drive fails, the raid system will start using the second drive automaticaly. I won't have to open my computer and switch drives, I should be able to just keep running my show, replaceing the bad drive when I got home.

I don't have the time to research the bootable USB drive so I don't know how much trouble it would be but if it works, it would be better than the backup system I have now which turned out to be none. Thanks for posting this info, it may help somebody else.

I did some research on the 1200a and found a bunch of good info on the Adaptech forum. Looks like my bases are covered. I'll keep you updated.

Thanks again!

your welcome:)

The card installed without a hitch. I'm creating an array right now. It's copying drive #1 to drive #2 as I tpye (20% done). I'll keep you updated.

The computer rebooted and I got a blue screen when Window XP tried to start. I did some research on this and could not get past the blue screen. I connected my master (C:\) drive to the motherboard and tired to install every driver I could find for the Adaptec 1200a card with no success, it may too old for my motherboard or XP. It didn't show up in XP as an Adptec 1200a, it shows up as an HPT370 UDMA/ATA100 RAID CONTROLER. :?

I had the second drive working as a bootable drive but when I tried to run both drives at the same time, one as the master and one as the slave, window changed something and I lost it. :f I reformated the second drive and I'm now using the Adaptec 1200a card to rebiuld the array which will give me my bootable second drive back. I'm going to leave the second bootable drive unplugged in the computer as a back up. If I have a C:\ drive failer I'll have to take my rack mount computer apart BUT at least I have a bootable second drive in the machine. :r :w

I feel like I had to go around my elbow to get to my a** hole but at least I have a bootable second drive in my machine.

I've learned that I can get a second bootable drive with Ghost (Ghost always crashes the first time I open it) or Aconis but I feel raid is what I need. I'm going to look into a newer Raid card.

Thanks again Beavis for sending me the Adaptec 1200a card. It didn't work correctly for me but I'm one step closer to having a reliable backup that will work without taking my computer apart to switch drives.

While looking for another Raid card I ran accross an Adpatec 1200a at Newegg. It looks like this card does not work with Windows XP. See the specifications:

Thanks Bob,
I'm looking at a Roswell card from Newegg right now. It's an inexpensive card but seems to have everything I need. Opps, it's not bootable. :f

If you don't mind me asking, why did you stop using a raid card? Am I going in the wrong direction here?

I use a small form factor Hp computer in my rack, with two hard drives.
a 80 gig for operating syst and programs, and a 750 gig for music, videos, and kma files,
and i always carry at least one laptop, for a backup.
i use to use the raid, with two 250 gig hard drives, but they became to small.
and at the time i did'nt want to spend the money for two 750 gig drives.
Jim, make sure your power supply will handle it. and with the raid, if a drive fails, your singer just keeps on singing, you won't even notice it.

madjim- with the Lord December 16th, 2008 09:41 AM

Which card did you use Bob?

kenpattx December 16th, 2008 10:32 AM

clone

why not copy/paste

Beavis December 16th, 2008 10:39 AM

hey ken

he wants 2 drives mirrored at all times in case one fails.

hey jim

it seems to me its easier to buy a 500gb drive for under a hundred and replace the original drive once a year.

then use the old drive as a backup. buy a couple of external USB cases for the old hard drives.

the drives they make are pretty reliable today. ive never had one crap out during a show. for that matter never had one go on my karaoke computer.

Hi' Jim,
I used rocket raid. Very easy to use, and cheap.
don't know if they still make them.
You could use a usb drive to boot from.
take a look at this, Bob
