I didn't see re-install in your last post

I know this was brought up in a previous post but did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the software?

Backup your songs to a separate folder just in case. Use Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs and completely uninstall Hoster.

Then download a fresh copy from MTU (make sure you are using 3.316) then reinstall using the factory defaults. Your hardware hasn't changed so you should be able to install with no problems with registration.

My guess is that there was a glitch or hiccough in the install. You can also download software to checkout the rest of your machine (just do a search, most of them are free to scan)

Vista has been giving people fits. The only remaining option to make the laptop work would be to downgrade to XP until the bugs are fixed in the applications which I would only consider as a last resort.

One last thing...does the shutdown happen at random times or is it always the same amount of time consistently. If it is consistent could you tell us how long it takes (as accurately as possible) to shut down. Might provide a couple of clues to the cause.

Good Luck, keep us posted. We'll get you through this.

I'm online all the time and use Yahoo Messenger (monolithent@yahoo.com) if you want to chat. We can try to work this out together.

This is where I would start since you have Vista.

My vista machine has a gforce 7300 with vista bussiness.
works fine.
try unstalling video drivers and then reinstalling.
this might help. Bob

Anything working for you yet Lloyd?

Hoster problem

Hey everyone, it's time for an update and thanks to your input it's all positive. I don't know how to thank you guys enough. I'm embarassed to admit it but it seems a simple scan and repair program as suggested by Monolithent was all that was required. I've tested Hoster running non-stop for some time and "touch wood", except for the usual laptop "hum" (which I will appreciate advice on by the way) all is well. My first real test will be tonight though when I use it in a real gig for the first time. I'll be holding my breath until the last singer has finished. Once again, you guys "rock". http://forum.mtu.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

We've all been there, good luck, pal.

I must have stunned you all to silence with my good news (or my lack of basic computer knowledge) but thanks anyway fellas. You'll also be pleased to know the system came thru with flying colours over the weekend so it's all good news.

:) Good to hear that all is well. I believe a ground loop isolator will fix your hum problem. I am not exactly sure who sells them. I would check Amazon.com and possibly radio shack. Someone else on here might be more helpful.

This was posted quite a while back by a knowledgable member of the forums as being a safe way to remove hum.

Using Norton Ghost

To answer yoiur question, under normal circumstances, reinstalling Hoster does not cause the loss of your KMA files, and reinstalling may or may not solve the problem.

That said, as many problems Vista has been causing I wouldn't want to take the responsibility of telling you to go ahead and reinstall unless you would take the precaution to get a USB hard drive and back those files up before doing anything.

You need that at the very least anyway in the event of a crash.

Ideally, you should have a back up pc with everything on it, or use something like Norton Ghost and have your entire hard drive cloned to an external drive, for immediate recovery.

Some may disagree with me, but that's my take on it as erratic as Vista has been performing.

I TOTALY AGREE, my kma files are on 2 external hard drives and every week i norton ghost my computer. totally wiped the computer, run ghost and back to normal within 20 mins.

You guys using laptops wouldn't need this but I got rid of hum when I started using a battery buckup on my rackmount computer.

Toshiba Laptops

I also own a tosh laptop, with a ati graphics card. but pluging in a 2nd monitor causes the lap to crash. after hours of research, i found out that " toshiba flash cards" causes many problems with hoster. removing this program/driver fixed the problem.

hope this may help

I run Ghost and clone weekly also.

Those that go on indefinately without cloning the entire drive, just back up certain files, are in for a big surprise when their main drive goes funky, and after cloning from their backup drive to get running again find themselves having trouble running programs because they are misssing all the windows updates and have to do that all over again, not to mention missing any new favorites they added, new email addresses, new documents, virus definitions, programs, and on and on, all because they didn't bother to run a clone on a regular basis.

norton ghost

i agree with george, it only takes about 30-50 mins once a week to backup your ENTIRE SYSTEM. If you find faults atfer that or you are not happy after installing a program, you can set everything back to normal without having to re install updates ect.

:)

I must be doing something wrong then, I clone my 40 gigbyte HD (30 gig of info) and it takes all night.

George November 15th, 2007 09:56 PM

Never bothered to clock it before, just knew it was fast, but got curious and just did it. I do it on Fridays anyway.

Have a 40 gb drive with 20gb used.

Cloned in 19 minutes including both beginning and ending re-boots, and overwriting windows.

Seems to be in line with what others are reporting.

Battery backup question

Just answering the question from above about what is a battery backup.

The good ones are essentially a really heavy power/spike/surge strip with a battery incorporated that allows a battery to supply electricity to usually certain plugs on the strip in the event of power failure long enough to shut down a computer or other critical system safely.

The added advantage of many of these is that they operate as a power conditioner as well by running power through the battery. The battery sends out a very stable amount of electricity and prevents fluctuations. The fluctuations may be what is causing the hum in the system.

Other possible options could be bad or insufficient sheilding on power and audio cables that are too close to each other or something is wired wrong causing a ground loop.

I recommend a power conditioner to anyone using a PA system for any purpose. Prevents problems and might even keep equipment from wearing out as soon. I wouldn't recommend running an amp or any heavy draw items through a battery backup. I have had experiences with the batteries failing due to excessive power draw.

By the way, I'm glad to hear you got running Lloyd. I replied to your email, by the way. Sorry it took so long.

Jon
