View Full Version : Corrupted and Unreadable KMA files -> USB Drive port was bad!

I don't know what happened, but for some unexplained reason, my entire file that I spent 4 days importing 2500 songs into Hoster, is now Corrupt and unreadable!?!?!?!

Why would a file just become corrupt and unreadable for no reason at all? I have done nothing unusual, I have no viruses, I have not done anything out of the ordinary to cause this?

Can this be recovered? Or am I just screwed, and will have to reload EVERY blasted disc all over again?

HELP!?!?!?!

Please read this FAQ Answer (http://mtu.com/kb/admin/main.php?page=article_modify&id=20) and provide us as much information as you can.

What is reporting that it is corrupt and unusable? Is it the Songs.mdb database? If so, read in the Manual how to Rebuild the Songs Database.

We have never heard of imported KMA song files being damaged like this.

I expect, something has happened to your Hoster installation.

Run the Hoster Installation program again and select the MODIFY option. This will fix any problem that may exist with Hoster.

You should then be able to use your KMA files and continue importing your other discs.

Did you do anything to the computer - add hardware, install a new program, etc. - that may have caused this problem?

when you are done importing all your CD-G's, you should copy them to another hard drive (external or internal) for safe keeping in case anything happens to your computer !! with this back up you will never have to re-import again !

:) :) :)

I haven't done anything unusual. I am not sure why it malfunctioned, but I just cannot open the folder that has those songs in. In fact, it says in the folder properties that it is empty, when I know I had over 2000 songs in it. It's a mystery, and I will just have to take another 4 days to reimport. This time though, I'll be damned not to have a DVD back up!

CUSTOMATIONS,

Hoster saves the imported tracks as .KMA files.

Why not try searching for .KMA and see if Windows comes up with anything.

Maybe the path to the folder was messed up when you were importing. If they can be located, then they can be copied to whatever folder they should be in.

You could then make certain the path to that folderis set up correctly in Hoster.

Worth a try.

George

I have done that. And they are definitely gone. Furthermore, I am very anal when it comes to file designation. Thanks for the insight though.

you are saying after you imported all your cd-g's.......they disappeared ? something sounds wrong !!

i know your anal about file des. but maybe you should do a computer search and input in the search field .kma make sure you put the dot before kma !

I have done that. In fact an even more extensive way to search for a file like that is by using *.kma I am very savvy when it comes to these things, but I can't explain what happened.

I'm not even concerned about it anymore. I'll just reimport them over some weekend when I have nothing better to do, and back them all up on dvd. No biggie.

I believe it may have happened because I had them saved to an external hdd. And possibl the hot swapping of the drive corrupted the files. But that also seems unlikely, but still possible. That's the only explanation I can derive.

For files to disappear, your Windows install may be damaged somehow. In over 2 years, no Hoster user has ever reported losing files as you have. If one file goes bad, thats one thing. For all to go bad takes a very bad malfunction in Windows.

We have many users with USB hard drives and I don't recall hearing of a single file being lost.

When was the last time you did a Windows Update? That may shed some light on the problem.

Read this and run DXDIAG (http://www.mtu.com/kb/index.php?page=index_v2&id=6&c=root) and attach the log file to your post here. That will allow us to see your computer setup. Sometimes there is a glaring error that can be fixed easily.

I personally would not try importing more songs until you discover why your Windows is deleting them. Your computer won't be usable in the state it is in currently, and you won't have the confidence to run a show with it that way.

I know what happened now.....

The external case for my HDD is bad. I tried accessing some other files that I also had in Microstudio, and it would not recognize on my PC.

So, as a way to trouble shoot it, I removed the HDD from the case, and installed the HDD on another desktop I have. The hard drive works perfectly fine. So I replaced the case, and sure enough, my hard drive work fine again.

I called the manufacturer, and queried why the case went bad after only having it 3 months, of course they didn't "have the energy" to answer my question, but rather just opted the easy way out and offered to send me a new one. They did say however that if the ports were going bad while I was trying to access my files on the drive, whether I was importing new files, or retrieving them, the data may have been broken, and it would result an unreadable format.

So as it turns out, it was the case it self. But, as a precaution, I did format my hard drive on both my PC and External, started from scratch, and now will have to relive, and learn a valuable lesson.....BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP!

FYI, here is the log you requested for the new install. Please tell me if there is anything I could change BEFORE I go installing this again.

DirectX needs to be updated. You are running version 8.1

Hoster needs vrsion 9.0 or better to run properly.

Also if you don't mind a bit if advice. Just to make sure everything is o.k. when you start importing again, check after the first cd imported to make certain the import is going as it should, and you can retrieve the files. Hindsight being what it is, you probably already realized you should have done that, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
